The University of Dundee was established by Royal Charter on 1 August 1967. The creation of the University was due to increasing political pressures to admit more students to higher education. Under these pressures it became untenable for Queens College, Dundee to continue as it was, as a college of the University of St Andrews. Dr Henry C. Williamson (d 1949) graduated from St Andrews University in 1892. He spent five years in Canada investigating the migratory movements of salmon for the Canadian government and thereafter returned to Scotland to continue his research at University College, Dundee. He was a member of staff of the Fishery Board's research station at Aberdeen and made a life-long study of fish and crustacea. He was a fellow of the Royal Society.
